Knockout Pout
In May, Nicholas Pacheco ’10 (MFA, Kanbar, Film) will direct the first Costa Rica – Singapore feature film, Knockout Pout, produced by Stephanie Bousley ’10 (MFA, Kanbar, Film) and local television producer Tommy Chia. Unique Story, Universal Themes
Knockout Pout is a story about Susan Tan, a single beautician who lost custody of her son Matt, who grows up to be a child prodigy in ping pong, and Susan becomes an unemployed alcoholic.
“Life’s disappointments and bottles of vodka have gotten the best of Sue for the last ten years, but she’s not sitting around her house moping. She dresses up, goes out, and rocks everybody’s world with a great manicure,” adds Pacheco in a video on their Indiegogo.com page. “It’s not about feeling sorry for yourself; it’s about being able to celebrate the little you do have.”
You Can Help
The filmmakers are trying to secure the last portion of their budget though “crowdfunding”, a collective initiative which allows the public to participate in the film by making donations and collecting perks; like signed DVD copies of the finished product, make-over kits, or their name written into the script in a funny way.
The system has been allowing filmmakers all over the world to take films to the big screen for the last two years and is said to be the ultimate independent solution to the studio system, since it allows complete creativity without any interference from government agencies or money-hungry producers.
“We are close to our goal, but not quite there yet. We still need help from the Singaporean community to make the project happen,” comments Producer Tommy Chia. They have until March 14th, 2011 to raise the last few thousand dollars necessary to start production in May.
