Elements of Composition In Moving Images
H64.2135.901 4 Credits
This class focuses on the discovery and exploration of design aspects in art, film and animation and in the way they repeat in each medium. During the semester we will focus on every one of those elements and discuss of how they visually represent the storyline. Those elements will include light & shadow, color, character-pose, texture, composition, directions and vectors, shapes, perspective etc... Each class will be accompanied by art and screenings of film and animation that we dissect in attention to those elements and how the artist uses them to achieve a certain effect. The student will finally have a variety of elements that he/she can use to create and recreate in his/her own creative work and he/she will know how to tell a visual story with the aspects of composition. Students bring each week some of their own artwork, film or animation and we will discuss if the final image has the intended effect on the audience. Together we will rethink the visuals and offer solutions that might strengthen the impact of the image. There are no required reading assignments for this course; nevertheless a list of books will be provided for the students.Open to non-majors
